Should HTA look beyond the healthcare system?

The case for a broader, societal perspective in health technology assessment has been building for years, but so have the arguments against it.

Grace Hampson is joined by Chris Skedgel, a Director at OHE, to dig into one of health economics’ most contested methodological debates: what are health systems trying to achieve through health technology assessments (HTA)? And whose perspective should they adopt in doing so?

They’ll discuss:

  • Why health technology assessment has traditionally focused on patient health and healthcare costs — and whether that’s still fit for purpose
  • The case for including carer impacts, value of time, and productivity in assessments of value
  • The biggest arguments against a societal perspective in HTA— and how to respond to them
  • What the recent HEMA report got right, and where it may have been too cautious
