The trade deal and the trade-offs

The NICE threshold uplift made the headlines, but the bigger change may be elsewhere.

Grace Hampson is joined by Andy Briggs, Professor of Health Economics at LSHTM, and Adrian Towse, former Director of the Office of Health Economics, to explore the policy drivers behind the change in NICE’s threshold and whether the threshold is the right tool to achieve them.

They’ll discuss:

  • What the UK-US trade deal changes for NICE’s threshold and for the VPAG rebate
  • Whether the threshold or total medicines expenditure matters more, and why they are different questions
  • Whether ring-fencing a pharmaceutical budget would make the trade-offs clearer or create new problems
  • Lessons learned from the Cancer Drugs Fund and what they mean for policy levers today

A Dose of Economics is Grace and the Office of Health Economics (OHE) team thinking out loud, debating the questions that matter most in healthcare policy, resource allocation, and health system decision-making, with the experts doing the work at the highest level. New episodes drop every Tuesday.
