Fred McElwee

Economist

Fred joined the OHE in November 2022 after reading the MSc Global Health Science & Epidemiology at the University of Oxford, where he completed his master’s dissertation on health poverty while on placement at the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC). Previously, he read the MA (Hons) Economics at the University of Edinburgh, where he wrote his thesis on innovative contracting of health technologies.

Immediately prior to joining OHE, he held a fellowship at a health technology company, where he worked with EMR data and built an agentbased simulation model of healthcareacquired infections in a hospital ward. Fred has worked with the OHE in the past on projects related to Outcomes Based Pricing and Indication Based Pricing, and with the National Health Council as a Health Policy Intern. He is also currently involved with a project on the economics of AMR which aims to responsibly expand access to antibiotics in resourcepoor settings. His research interests span a broad range of topics at the intersection of economics, health, and technology.
